Jerking The Curtain

That's the term used to describe the opening match of the night, and since this is our very first blog, I feel it's an appropriate title. Welcome to "In The Ring With The Grapplin' Greek. This blog will hopefully entertain you and keep you informed about everything and anything going on in the world of professional wrestling, more specifically the WWE.

I know TNA is out there, but since I have a wife and two kids and a full-time job here at WCSH6, I have limits. My goal is to update this blog two or three times a week. You'll get full and detailed reviews of Raw on Tuesday and Smackdown on Saturday, and a healthy dose of opinion regarding anything pro wrestling-related in between.

By now, you're probably wondering just who the Grapplin' Greek is. Basically, I'm a life-long fan of the sweet science that's performed in the squared circle. I first watched wrestling back in the 70's with my grandmother. That's right, good old yiayia got a kick of it. She came over from Greece to take care of me when I was little, and was fascinated by the action. Her favorite grappler was none other than Spiros Arion, who hailed from Athens, Greece. I later found out he was a butcher from New York, but I didn't have the heart to tell her.

As I grew up, I was a full-blown Hulk-a-maniac...I even had a giant picture of him on my college dorm room wall. That would explain the lack of chicks back in the mid-eighties. As you can see by the picture above, I even had the chance to meet the Hulkster a few years ago, and it was an experience I won't soon forget. I'll tell you more about that in a future blog. Anyway, after the 80's, I became fully consumed with the famous Monday night wars between WCW and the WWF which raged until Vince McMahon finally forced Ted Turner to tap out.

Now it's the 21st Century, and while the popularity of pro wrestling is down from its heyday, Raw remains one of the top rated cable shows on television. As for me...I still love it. Are there things that Vince McMahon does that make me shake my head? Absolutely. But there's still something about a well-performed wrestling match that tells a subtle story that gets my heart pumping.

So for all you rassling fans out there, I hope you enjoy the blogs, the opinions, and the humor I'll try to inject each time I post. I'll be back on Tuesday with a full Raw recap, but until then...referee Mike Chioda is calling for the bell.
